Love Letters to San José Issue #3: Portraits of San José
Portraits of San José is the third edition of Love Letters to San José, a zine dedicated to exploring, promoting, and uplifting community voices within the creative culture of San José. This issue aims to tell the story of the people who helped shape what San José is to you. I joined the editorial, website, and social media teams, eager to do as much as I could to be involved in the San José creative community.
Responsibilities:
Conduct and transcribe interviews with local creatives who submitted a piece of art to the issue
Collaborate with the design team to create a cohesive spread including submission, interview, and design
Meet weekly with the website team to learn and practice with a new tool such as Figma to draft website design
Assist zine process, oversee grammar, and spell-check drafted stories
Upload content to Instagram, complying with the content calendar schedule

I was eager to come back to my hometown, San José, California, and greet it with a new perspective. I wanted to be as involved as possible with the people who have been here for generations, the people I grew up with, the people who make my city great. I yearned for a sense of community, and Love Letters to San José filled a community shaped hole in my heart. I immediately felt at home, collaborating on a creative project, staying up late with designers and copywriters because we’re so excitedly filled with ideas. It replicated my involvement in clubs in college, where young minds created just to create. I am thankful to say I have found community and continued to be involved in local events, which has only allowed me to embrace the love I truly have for home.
